Introducttion:
When you see a spectacular, brilliantly crafted piece of jewellery resting upon a graceful neck, immediately, you experience a desire to touch, to admire. Human beings have always had more than a passing interest in objects lumped under the enormous jewellery umbrella. Then of course theres that familiar clichéd constantly doing the rounds in your brain that only a jewellers son or daughter can make it in this profession, and theres no scope for anybody else. Thats where you are quite wrong.
Jewellery designing, as a career, may have been once limited to the traditional kaarigars (who mostly played the dual role of designer-cum-manufacturer) and this craft was faithfully passed down from generation to generation. But with the global upsurge, which brought in its wake changing perceptions of what jewellery should mean to a woman; came the demand for professionally trained and qualified jewellery designers, at par with international standards. This is not to say that the traditional craftsman does not stand today. Where the trained designer scores over the kaarigar is that the former is aware of trends, and the specifics of jewellery designing. And its no longer only about carving design on metal, because avenues like marketing and production, or even tapping the vast export market the opportunities are endless and constantly growing. Today jewellery design as a career is steadily grabbing international attention. India has produced award-winning jewellery and accessory designers.
Job Prospect:
Jewellery designers prepare sketches - by hand or on the computer - to conceptualise the design according to the customer demands. After consulting with the customer or the manufacturing team, designer works accordingly, keeping in view the latest trends. The use of computer aided design (CAD/CAM) programmes and tools is made generally to create and better visualise the final product.
Computer models allow greater ease and flexibility in exploring a number of design alternatives, thus reducing design costs and cutting the time it takes to deliver a product to market.
